What Is Lower Back Pain?
Lower back pain is one of Australia’s most common musculoskeletal concerns. It may be acute (0–6 weeks), sub-acute (6–12 weeks) or chronic (12+ weeks). Most cases are non-specific, meaning the pain is not caused by serious disease or structural damage but rather by irritation or overload of muscles, joints, discs and ligaments.
Common Symptoms
-
Aching, tightness or sharp pain in the lower back
-
Stiffness when bending, twisting or rising from sitting
-
Pain that comes and goes, or worsens after prolonged sitting
-
Discomfort during lifting, driving or repetitive tasks
-
Sometimes mild leg pain without red-flag neurological signs

Mechanical or Muscular Strain
From repetitive lifting, twisting, awkward posture or deconditioning.
What Causes Lower Back Pain?
Joint Irritation
Facet joints or sacroiliac joints can become stiff or sensitised.
Disc-Related Pain
Non-specific disc irritation or age-related disc changes.
Lifestyle Factors
Long sitting, reduced sleep, stress and low movement variety can increase pain sensitivity

Thorough Assessment

Education & Self-Management Strategies

Manual Therapy (when appropriate)
Your chiropractor will take a detailed history, assess your movement, and perform orthopaedic and neurological screening to understand what may be contributing to your pain. This helps guide a personalised, safe and appropriate care plan.
Understanding your back pain is an important part of recovery. We provide clear explanations about contributing factors, posture, load management, pacing and recovery expectations to help you feel more confident managing your symptoms day-to-day.
Your chiropractor may use gentle hands-on techniques to support mobility and comfort. These can include:
-
Spinal mobilisation
-
Gentle spinal manipulation
-
Soft tissue techniques
-
Stretching
All techniques are tailored to your comfort level and clinical presentation.

Exercise & Movement Programming
Movement plays a key role in back pain recovery. Your chiropractor may recommend simple exercises to help improve confidence, stability and overall mobility. These may include core activation, glute strengthening, hip mobility or movement-based patterns suited to your goals.
Collaborative Care
If your symptoms suggest the need for further investigation or co-management, we work closely with your GP and other healthcare practitioners. When red flags or non-musculoskeletal causes are identified, you will be referred appropriately.
