With the new school term fast approaching, it’s time for parents to be looking into how the year may affect your child’s spinal health. Studies show that daily backpack carrying is a frequent cause of discomfort for school children with backpacks the cause of pain in over 50% of cases (Source: Australian Chiropractors Association).



It is important to consider the following when preparing your child's backpack for the new school year.
- Choose an appropriate backpack with broad, padded shoulder straps ensuring the size of backpack suits your child's size
- Ensure the weight is distributed evenly with heavy items packed at the bottom of the bag and close to the spine

- Demonstrate to your child how they should wear their backpack, ensuring it is with straps on BOTH shoulders

- Wear the waist belt (if present)

- Sort through what your child is packing, if it isn't necessary then don't pack it, leave extra items at home or in the locker


Heavy and incorrectly worn bags may lead to poor posture, slouching and uneven hips.
